Describe a person who wears unusual clothes

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card

Describe a person who wears unusual clothes.

You should say
Who is he/she?
How do you know him/her?
What kind of clothes he/she wears?
Why do you consider that his/her clothing choices are weird?

Note: You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Model Answer 1:

  • Unusual means not habitual/commonly occurring. Nowadays, people mostly judge another person’s personality and behaviour through his/her dress.
  • Most people used to wear formal and casual clothes that suit their personalities, but I saw some people who wore abnormal clothes or can say unusual garments.

Who is he/she? and How do you know him/her?

  • Here I am going to talk about my neighbour, who wears unusual clothes.
  • Her name is ______.
  • She is 25 years old and doing graduation at a local college.
  • Her face complexion is not too fair.

What kind of clothes he/she wear? and Why do you consider that his/her clothing choices are weird?

  • He wears very unusual clothes such as very bright colours and abnormal dress design. She doesn’t only wear unique clothes but wears unusual footwear also.
  • A few days ago, in December when most people wear woollen clothes, she wore a bright pink colour summer dress with red colour shoes. Everyone thought is she made. Some people also laugh at her, but she did not mind it.

  • I know her since childhood. I think it is not her fault, of wearing different designer clothes because her mother bought clothes for her when she was a child.
  • So in that way she is habitual to wearing unusual clothes.

Model Answer 2:

  • I personally like to dress very conservatively, and I usually avoid bright colours.
  • If I think about unusual clothing choices, there is only one person I can think of.

Who is he/she? and How do you know him/her?

  • He is my close friend, Yagya.

What kind of clothes he/she wears?

  • I find his clothing preferences unusual because he doesn’t follow the usual clothing norms.
  • For example, once I saw him wearing sandals with formals, to be precise, a men’s three-piece suit and sandals.

Why do you consider that his/her clothing choices are weird?

  • Then, another time I saw him wearing a jacket in the summers.
  • He doesn’t believe in societal norms.
  • He just wears whatever he feels like wearing.
  • I have also seen him wearing girlish shades like pink and purple.
  • Actually, he wants to be a fashion designer when he grows up.
  • So, he likes to experiment with clothes.
  • I have seen him taking his mother’s and father’s clothes and make a full dress out of them for himself.
  • He does that with his own clothes too.
  • For example, recently, he made denim shorts by cutting his jeans.
  • I think I have heard people talking about his odd fashion choices.
  • However, he is proud of his clothing choices.
  • The fact is that he has an excellent physique, and he is able to carry everything he wears so well.

  • Every time I see his clothes, I feel like I wouldn’t wear them, but I also somehow feel that he is looking good in them.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 : Follow up Questions

Here some examples of follow up questions that you may asked during your speaking part 3 by examiner related to cue card “describe a person who wears unusual clothes”.

1. Where do Indians normally buy clothes?
Indians buy clothes from a variety of places. I think for fancy clothes people normally shop at malls or branded shops like Zara and for day-to-day or basically casual wear, people go to the street markets. Recently, many people have also started buying clothes online.

2. The difference between men’s and women’s choices of clothes?
I think the first difference is in the shades. Men go for slightly darker and sombre shades like blue, brown, and grey, while women go for brighter colours like pink, yellow, red, etc. Another difference is that most men prioritize comfort over fashion, while it is vice versa in women’s case.

3. Do clothes affect people’s mood?
Yes, certainly. When people feel they look good in something, they feel more confident, which makes them more social and talkative. The comfort level also matters. If people feel they are uncomfortable in something, it also affects their mood negatively.

4. What do people consider when buying clothes?
I think people consider many factors while buying clothes. Some of the main factors are cost, colour, brand, comfort, uniqueness, etc. Personally, I prioritize brand and comfort over other factors.
