Pulse Rate Changes of Two Individuals Over Four Minutes

Writing Task

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The chart below shows the changes in pulse rate (in beats per minute) of two individuals, Mabel (a 36-year-old office worker) and Albert (a 26-year-old former college athlete), over a four-minute period.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Sample Answer

The line graph illustrates the pulse rate changes of two individuals, Mabel, a 36-year-old office worker, and Albert, a 26-year-old former athlete, over a four-minute period.

Overall, both experienced a sharp rise in pulse rates, peaking at the second minute, followed by a decline. However, Mabel’s rate increased more dramatically, while Albert showed a quicker recovery.

At rest, Albert’s pulse was higher at around 80 beats per minute compared to Mabel’s 65. By the first minute, both saw slight increases before reaching their maximum at the second minute: Mabel peaked at nearly 150 bpm, considerably above Albert’s 120 bpm. Thereafter, Mabel’s pulse dropped to 100 by the third minute and ended at 80, while Albert’s rate declined more steeply, falling to 60 by the fourth minute.

In summary, although Mabel reached a higher peak, Albert demonstrated faster recovery, reflecting the impact of age and athletic background on cardiovascular response.
