CELPIP Speaking Task 1 Scoring Criteria

Your response is assessed on four equally weighted criteria, each mapped to the CLB scale:

CriterionWhat Raters Look For
CoherenceClear, logical flow of ideas with smooth transitions between points
VocabularyRange, precision, and naturalness of word choices; minimal repetition
ListenabilityPronunciation, intonation, stress, and rhythm that is easy to understand
Task FulfillmentDirectly addressing the prompt with relevant, developed content

A score of CLB 10–12 is typically required for immigration purposes. Most test-takers aiming for permanent residency should target at least CLB 9.

Tips to Score Higher on CELPIP Speaking Task 1

1. Use the Full 90 Seconds

Unlike IELTS Speaking Part 2, there is no minimum time requirement stated — but raters expect a fully developed response. Aim to speak for at least 75–90 seconds.

2. Structure Your Answer

A simple structure helps coherence scores:

  • Opening: Briefly restate the situation in your own words
  • Main points: Give 2–3 clear pieces of advice or opinions with reasons
  • Closing: Summarize or add a final recommendation

3. Speak Naturally, Not Formally

CELPIP tests conversational English. Avoid overly formal or scripted language. Speak as you would to a friend — clearly, confidently, and naturally.

4. Vary Your Vocabulary

Avoid repeating the same words. If you find yourself using a word twice, pause and think of a synonym. A wide vocabulary range directly improves your Vocabulary score.

5. Watch Your Pronunciation

You do not need a native accent — raters assess whether you are easy to understand. Focus on clear consonants, natural sentence stress, and rising/falling intonation at the right points.

6. Practice Regularly

Consistent daily practice of 10–15 minutes is more effective than occasional long sessions. Use this free tool every day with a different topic to build speed and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CELPIP harder than IELTS?
They test different formats. CELPIP is entirely computer-based and uses Canadian-context scenarios, while IELTS uses a face-to-face examiner format. Many test-takers find CELPIP Speaking less stressful because there is no live examiner.

The CELPIP General test has 8 speaking tasks in total, ranging from giving advice (Task 1) to giving directions, describing scenes, making predictions, and dealing with difficult situations.

What CLB score do I need for Express Entry?
For Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker), you typically need CLB 7 in all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Higher CLB scores earn more Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points.

Can I use this tool for CELPIP General Training?
Yes. The speaking task format and scoring criteria are the same for both CELPIP General and CELPIP General-LS (Listening and Speaking only).
