Key Facts About CELPIP Speaking Task 2
Everything you need to know before you start practicing
What Is CELPIP Speaking Task 2?
CELPIP Speaking Task 2 — Giving Instructions — asks you to explain clearly how to do something or how to use something. You might be asked to describe how to cook a dish, give directions, explain how to operate a device, or walk someone through a process. The key is to speak in a logical, step-by-step manner that a listener could easily follow.
What You Need to Do
In this task, you will:
- Read a scenario that sets the context (e.g. "Your friend has never made coffee before. Explain how to make a cup of coffee.")
- Record your response — you have 60 seconds to speak
- Explain a process in clear, ordered steps using transitional language
Unlike Task 1 (Personal Experience), Task 2 requires you to organise information procedurally rather than describe your own opinions or memories.
Scoring: CLB 1–12
CELPIP Speaking is scored on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scale from 1 to 12. Your Task 2 response is assessed across four criteria:
| Criterion | What It Measures |
|---|---|
| Coherence | Logical organisation of steps, use of connectors (first, then, finally) |
| Vocabulary | Range and accuracy of words and phrases related to the topic |
| Listenability | Pronunciation, rhythm, and ease of understanding |
| Task Fulfillment | Whether all required information is clearly addressed |
A score of CLB 7–8 is typically required for Canadian immigration purposes (e.g., Express Entry).
Tips for a High Score on Task 2
1. Use sequencing language
Structure your response with clear connectors: first, second, then, after that, next, finally. This helps the listener follow your instructions with ease.
2. Be specific
Avoid vague instructions. Instead of "put it in the oven," say "place it in the oven at 180 degrees for 30 minutes." Specific details show both vocabulary range and task fulfillment.
3. Don't rush
Speak at a natural, steady pace. Rushing increases errors and reduces listenability. Aim for around 120–150 words per minute.
4. Cover all parts of the prompt
Read the scenario carefully. If it mentions a specific audience (e.g., "explain to a child"), adapt your language accordingly.
5. Practice common processes
Common topics include: cooking recipes, using appliances, giving directions, setting up devices, following safety procedures. Practise a variety of these to build confidence.
