Whenever I get a slice of spare time away from my hectic schedule, I often find myself dreaming of escaping to a serene and untouched place. One such destination that is high on my travel bucket list is Landour, a quiet, quaint little cantonment town located in the northern state of Uttarakhand in India.

Where it is
Landour is situated just a few kilometers uphill from the popular hill station of Mussoorie. Unlike its bustling neighbor, Landour remains a hidden gem, surrounded by dense canopy forests of deodar, pine, and rhododendron, offering a spectacular, unobstructed view of the snow-capped Himalayas.

What you will do there
If I manage to visit, my itinerary would be incredibly simple. I want to avoid the typical tourist traps and instead focus on unwinding. I would love to take long, lazy walks along the famous 'Gol Chakkar' path, breathing in the fresh, mountain air. I also plan to spend hours reading books at a cozy local cafe, perhaps sipping on hot chai and enjoying some freshly baked goods from the historic Landour Bakehouse.

How long you will stay there
I would love to spend at least a four to five-day weekend there. I feel a short weekend getaway wouldn't do justice to the peace this place offers. This duration would give me ample time to unplug from technology, sync my mind with nature, and return feeling completely rejuvenated.

And explain why you would like to visit it
The main reason I am yearning to visit Landour is to escape the chaotic hustle and bustle of city life. Living in a noisy urban area in India can sometimes be overwhelming, and I feel a desperate need for some solitude and quietude. Landour’s old-world charm, colonial-era architecture, and tranquil atmosphere make it the perfect sanctuary for me to recharge my batteries and find my inner peace.

Q.

Why do you think some people choose not to travel abroad?

There are several reasons why some individuals prefer to stay within their home country rather than venturing abroad. Firstly, international travel can be prohibitively expensive, involving costly flights, visa fees, and accommodation, which might not fit everyone's budget. Additionally, some people experience culture shock or anxiety regarding language barriers and unfamiliar cuisines. In a country as diverse as India, many feel that there is already an overwhelming abundance of landscapes, cultures, and historical sites to explore locally, making foreign trips seem unnecessary. Lastly, the hassle of lengthy visa processing and long-haul flights often discourages those who simply seek a relaxing, stress-free vacation.

Q.

Do you think a gap period in life is important?

Yes, I strongly believe that taking a gap period, whether after high school, graduation, or mid-career, can be incredibly beneficial. Modern life is often a relentless rat race, and constant pressure can lead to severe burnout. A gap year provides people with a much-needed breathing space to reflect on their goals and discover their true passions. During this time, individuals can acquire practical life skills, travel, volunteer, or even learn a new language, which fosters immense personal growth. Ultimately, it allows people to return to their academic or professional journeys with a renewed sense of purpose and a refreshed mindset.
