Model Answer

The maps illustrate significant changes to a former mining town.

Overall, it is apparent that the town became not caring about the industry of mining and more on tourism with different places related to history and facilities for dining/eating and entertainment.

Previously, mining towns were connected to mining entrances and associated infrastructure for workers. Next to the mine on the east side were two waste pits (excess waste needs to be dumped). In the centre of the map was a hospital area for treating injuries. Adjacent to the mine was an office building, a changing room for staff, and a parking lot for cars and trucks a short distance away.

Furthermore, to date, nothing has changed in the car parking lot and the mine is still there, but now there are more visitors than workers. Museums were built in the office and changing rooms, and the truck parking lot and the medical area became sidewalks (towards the children’s playground) and cafes, respectively. Eventually, the waste pit was removed to create a truck lane and picnic area.
