When you wear it? I would like to talk about the uniform I used to wear during my school days. We had to wear it every day from Monday to Saturday, so it became a very important part of my childhood.
On some special events like Independence Day or annual functions, we wore the same uniform but with a badge or ribbon that the school provided. So, basically, the uniform was something I wore almost every single day of my school life.
Who bought it for you? My parents used to buy the uniform for me at the beginning of every academic year. There was a shop near our school that was authorized to sell the official uniform. I remember going there with my mother to try out the correct size.
She always insisted on buying one size bigger so that it would last for the whole year as children usually grow fast. Along with the uniform, she would also buy black shoes, white socks, and sometimes a new tie.
What does it look like? The uniform was very simple but neat. For boys, it was a white short-sleeved shirt with the school logo on the pocket and navy blue trousers. Girls used to wear a navy blue skirt with the same white shirt. We also had a striped blue-and-white tie which gave it a more formal look.
During winter, we had to wear a navy blue blazer with golden buttons, and it looked quite smart. Black shoes and a black belt were compulsory. On Mondays, we had to wear the full formal dress including the tie and polished shoes, while on Saturdays, we could go without the tie.
How you feel about it? To be honest, at that time I sometimes felt bored wearing the same clothes every day. I used to wish that I could wear casual clothes like jeans and T-shirts to school. But now when I look back, I feel proud of it because the uniform gave us a sense of equality.
Nobody could show off expensive clothes, so we all looked the same regardless of our family background. It also made us feel united, like we were all part of one team. Personally, I believe wearing a uniform also taught me discipline, and now I understand its real importance.
