Question Overview

Topic : Shopping
Type : Double Questions

Model Answer :

Purchasing on digital platforms instead of physical shops is in trend presently, which positively affects the environment and workers that are jobless because of this shift. I feel it brings both advantages and disadvantages to the environment and people who were rendered without work.

To begin with, as people shop without travelling out to stores, it saves valuable fossil fuels which are already depleting with an increase in vehicles. Hence the environment is primarily benefitted when the populace does shopping by clicking on gadgets without stepping or flying outside. Air pollution is cut down with an increase in the popularity of online shopping.

However, with the spiralling of buying on the internet, there is more packaging material consumed to courier ordered goods. There is a surge in plastic and paper packing usage for fulfilling such online orders. A recent report in the significant publication Times Daily, mentions that in the recent past the requirement for wrapping materials has doubled which adversely impacts the green cover on the planet, besides rising pollution with plastics strewn around.

However, despite being shown the door and displaced from 1 job, many working people have obtained employment with a higher pay from the logistics, marketing firms and behemoth online shopping organisations like Amazon, eBay, Myntra and Flipkart amongst others. Thus, although apparently, the attrition rate has risen in traditional sectors like manufacturing, people have nonetheless been absorbed in forthcoming digital markets.

To conclude, in my opinion, the growth in online buying in current times impacts the environment in positive and negative ways. Additionally, there is not any detrimental influence on individuals who lost jobs in the procedure since alternatives have opened up.
