Sample Answer

I live in the countryside where most buildings are single-storey houses, so we don’t really have tall or iconic buildings in my village. However, whenever I visit Ludhiana with my family, I always notice a very famous landmark there called the Clock Tower, or “Ghanta Ghar,” as locals call it.

Where it is?

The Clock Tower is located at the entrance of the main commercial area of Ludhiana. It stands in a busy marketplace, and the railway station is just a few kilometres away. Because of its central location, it is easy to spot and serves as a well-known meeting point.

What it looks like?

The building was constructed during the pre-independence period and reflects a European Gothic architectural style. It is built with red bricks, which makes it stand out among the colourful shops surrounding it. Although it is not extremely tall by modern standards—approximately the height of a four- or five-storey building—it appears quite impressive compared to the nearby single- and double-storey structures.

What function it has?

Originally, the Clock Tower was built to show the time to the public and to serve as a central landmark for the city. Over time, it has become much more than that. Today, it acts as a popular tourist attraction and a common meeting point for locals. It is also frequently used as a gathering place for political rallies and public events.

Why it is interesting?

I find this building interesting because it represents a part of our colonial history and has preserved its charm despite the rapid modernization of the city. Even though there are now many high-rise buildings in Ludhiana, the Clock Tower still holds cultural and historical significance. I have met my friends there several times before going shopping or watching movies, so it also has sentimental value for me.

Conclusion

Overall, the Clock Tower is not just a structure made of bricks; it is a symbol of the city’s heritage. Its historical importance and personal memories make it one of the most interesting buildings I know.

Follow-up Questions (Part 3)

What types of buildings are popular in your country?

In big cities, high-rise apartments and shopping malls are very popular because they save space and provide modern facilities like parking and security. In rural areas, however, single-storey houses are still common due to lower land costs and traditional lifestyles.

Is it worth spending a lot of money on the exterior appearance of a building?

It depends on the purpose of the building. For commercial buildings like hotels or shopping complexes, an attractive exterior can help draw customers. However, for residential houses, comfort and functionality are more important than decorative features.

Is it more important for a building to look good on the outside or on the inside?

In my opinion, the interior matters more because people spend most of their time indoors. A comfortable and practical interior design can greatly improve the quality of life, even if the exterior looks simple.

Why do people like to visit historical sites?

People enjoy visiting historical sites because they offer a glimpse into the past. These places help us understand history, culture, and architecture. Visiting such sites can be both educational and emotionally meaningful.
