Introduction:
Well, music is something that everyone loves and we often find some songs quite interesting either due to the music or lyrics. Here I would like to talk about a song that represents the history and culture of my country and I find to be the most interesting.

It is none other but the country’s national anthem and I heard it for the very first time when I was in first grade.

What story the song tells?
Actually, it is more like a ritual in my country that in every school National Anthem is played during the morning assembly. It’s a way to make children get familiar with country’s history and geography and promote unity at the same time. National Anthem is in the regional language, Hindi and is written by the famous poet, Rabindranath Tagore and describes the country India in a very aesthetic way.

It boasts the various features of the geography of India, especially the Himalayas rivers along with the cultural diversity and integrity of Indians. I must say that I particularly like the musical notes of this song and every time I listen to it, it evokes my patriotic feelings.

Similarly, during sports events also it is played to boost the morale of the players and to release their national feeling. I find this piece of music highly inspirational and energy giving that whenever I feel low I play it loud to feel rejuvenated.

It is sung by a young singer named Yohani and her co-singer is Sateeshan. They have sung this song in the Sinhalese language.

What story the song tells?
This song is about a beautiful girl in a rural village in Sri Lanka. “The boy who sings the song is in love with this girl and he tells her not to ignore him and his feelings. So this song is an expression of feelings of love. There have been multiple other versions by different singers. Some opted to directly translate the Sinhalese song into Hindi or other regional languages and some artists gave their own twist and meaning to the song. The song is catchy, melodious and harmonizing. It can make anyone dance.

Whether the song is popular?
This song is extremely popular in current times. It became an instant hit after it was released in May 2021 and almost everyone was singing it. It was dubbed in many languages and was viewed on YouTube across South Asia and was trending globally. In three to four months the song surpassed 100 million views on YouTube. I also saw innumerable remixes and many celebrities tweeting about it and lots of people making Instagram reels.

In my opinion, this song is interesting because of a couple of reasons. It has proved that music has no boundaries. Even though people do not understand the language most of them were singing it and enjoying it. This song also marked the first major breakthrough viral marketing in Sri Lanka. It brought fame not only for the singer but also for Sri Lanka.

Old people like to listen to religious songs, old film songs, and songs with slow beats.

6. How would your grandfather feel if you gave him some hip hop music to listen to?
I don’t think he will like it. He loves old Hindi film songs.

I think it is so because they feel connected to that time. Such songs bring back nostalgic memories of the past.

8. Why do you think people of different age groups have different favourite songs?
This is because tastes change with age. At a younger age, we like faster beat songs. When we grow older, we start liking slow songs, meaningful or devotional songs.

Small children like to listen to songs with fast beats on which they can dance, even if they don’t understand the lyrics.

10. What are the differences between popular music and the music that (young) children like to listen to?
I don’t think there is any difference. Children like popular music.
